God's Gift To Me

After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision:
"Do not be afraid, Abram.
I am your shield,
your very great reward."
Genesis 15:1

Abram had already received the news from God that He was going to bless him and that Abram would become a great nation (Genesis 12). But here it was years later and Abram still had no children… no heir. To become a great nation would require that you have at least one child, and preferably many children. God appears to Abram and tells him not to be afraid. Then God says, ‘I am your shield. I am your very great reward.’

We look for the blessing from God’s hand so often. Certainly He is our Provider. Every good gift comes from Him! (James 1:17) But here’s the truth: God Himself is our reward! To be in a relationship with Him… to be adopted into His family through the blood of Jesus is the blessing! God doesn’t provide a shield, He is the shield. He doesn’t donate a reward, He is the reward!

Father, Thank You for allowing me to call You Father. Thank You for loving me and thank You for Your Word. I understand that the gift of these moments with You is not the insight I will glean from Your Word – the gift is You! To sit at Your feet and to hear Your heartbeat… to know that I am a son of the Most High God and that You love me and want this relationship, wow! That is the gift. You are my shield. You are my great reward.
