Hell's Not For People
And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Revelation 20:10
This verse describes Hell. It’s very reminiscent of what Jesus said. (Matthew 13:40-43; 47-50; 22:50; 24:48-51; 25:28-30; Luke 13:27-28)
“As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.
Matthew 13:40-43
Hell is this ‘lake of burning sulfur’ that lasts forever, but it was not created for people. It was made for Satan and his angels. Why for them? Because they rebelled against God. Satan wanted God’s Glory. He wanted the worship that only God deserves. When it comes to His Glory, God Almighty does not share! He is a compassionate, loving and forgiving Father who is patient with us (Psalm 145:8-13) – but He will not share His glory.
Lucifer set himself up to be worshipped and the end result for him is eternal torment. Hell is not for people, but when we refuse God, rebelling against Him… when we do not humble our hearts before Him and worship Him alone, Hell happens. If we rebel and do not agree with God, we are removed from His Presence.
The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
Revelation 20:13-15
For many this does not seem fair! It’s not about fairness, though, it’s about grace! If God were fair, Jesus would not have died for our sins – we would die for our own sins. So, we need to shed all arrogance and everything within us that produces pride in our hearts. We need to honor God and live lives that worship Him. We need to receive this Good News so that our names can be written in the Book of Life!
Lord Jesus, I deserve nothing from You. Yet I have received everything from You.
‘I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever. Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever’ (Psalm 145:1-2). Help me this day to live fully in this grace. Live Your life through me and produce much good fruit, bringing glory to Yourself. You are awesome and good… and I worship You today.
