“And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.” (Romans 5:2)
Paul has presented the Gospel in the first 3 chapter of Romans. This Gospel says that there is now a righteousness that is from God available to people (Romans 3:21-22). Our own righteousness could not make us right in God’s sight, so God made another way. That way is Jesus. Awesome.
Romans 4 is an illustration. Paul explains how Abraham’s faith allowed him access to God and was actually ‘credited to him as righteousness.’ So God has done this kind of thing before. Faith is important!
Which leads us to Romans 5. “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand” (Romans 5:1-2). The reason we have this Gospel, or ‘Good News,’ is because through it we now have peace with God. Peace. Later Paul would be very clear that because of our sin we were God’s enemies. Now we are His friends! Now we have peace.
This new reality of peace with God is so awesome that Paul writes that we boast about it. We boast in the hope of the glory of God! By and large there is no boasting… but there’s boasting with this! Because of what God has done for us in Christ, we have Hope of seeing and dwelling in the Glory of God. We boast about that! We bring attention to that. It’s awesome Good News.
Lord, thank you for saving a self-righteous, self-indulgent person like me. Your blood covers my life and I belong to You. One day I will see You face to face! I’m going to boast about that! May many others come along with me. I live for You today.
