‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
14Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15Nothing outside a man can make him ‘unclean’ by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him ‘unclean.’ ”
18″Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him ‘unclean’? 19For it doesn’t go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods “clean.”)
21For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts…
Setting aside the doctrine of original sin for a moment, it is clear that the problem human beings have is with their hearts. Our of our hearts comes the evil that makes us unclean. What we need is a heart transplant. What we need is a new heart. Thankfully God has promised to give us new hearts. He exchanges these hearts of stone for hearts of flesh – ones that are soft toward Him.
My heart is naturally bent away from God. It is a source of evil in my life and will, just as Jesus said, make me unclean. I need to make the exchange for a new heart everyday. My heart needs to be trained to produce the good things of Christ. This training is reading and applying the Word of God in my life. As I yield to God’s Spirit, he gives me this new heart. My mindset and desires become more like Jesus Christ.
Father – thank You for the transformation of my own heart! I know that You are molding my heart as You would want it – conforming it into the image of Jesus. Please continue! Please change my heart and allow what comes from it to glorify You and build Your Kingdom. Thank You for Your grace and mercy in Christ that makes this even possible! And thank You for the end of a month spent in Your Word.
