So be on guard; I have told you everything ahead of time.”
Be on guard! Be alert!
Therefore keep watch…
What I say to you I say to everyone: watch!
Learn the lesson of the fig tree. When its twigs become tender and its leaves come out – summer is almost here! So it is with these signs of the end times. When we see them taking place we should know that Jesus is coming again soon. In this passage Jesus communicates the theme of the New Testament when it speaks about His second coming: Be ready! Be alert! We do not know the day or the hour, but we can know the season! When we see the “signs of the times” we need to look heavenward for our Savior. He’s coming!
The Lord is saying to me what He says to everyone: Watch! Be ready! It seems that an important part of this is anticipation. Am I living each day with the anticipation of seeing Jesus face to face? It is entirely too easy to live this day just like the last. “It’s been 2000 years and Jesus hasn’t returned… he’ll probably not come today or anytime soon.” This would be the opposite kind of mindset. I need to live my days anticipating that great day. I need to be on guard; watchful and waiting… alert! Not asleep at the wheel. Living daily wit anticipation of Christ’s return will change my days. With that mindset my true priorities in Christ will emerge and I can be the type of disciple that is more like Jesus. I’ll be more useful for Him today.
Lord – Thank You for this Scripture that reminds me of the truth. I will live this day for you, anticipating Your return – allowing that hope to mold my days. Come quickly Lord Jesus! (Revelation 22:20)
