There is such a thing as a “calling.” Barnabas and Saul received a calling from the Lord. The Holy Spirit had work for them to do. The disciples obeyed, fasting and praying and sending them off. Verse 4 says, “The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit…” God had work for them to do; called them to do it and led them through it! God would not have called them to do His work and them left them alone. No, the Holy Spirit is a companion and guide. It’s notable to me that the disciples heard the Holy Spirit’s instructions when they were worshipping and fasting.
I feel like a called man. The Holy Spirit has work for me to do. I have a calling. There are times when I entertain other occupations in my mind, but none of them would be my calling. I am called to lead the local church in being the light of the world and the salt of the earth (
Matt. 5:13-16). If God has called me out to do this then He will lead me through it – everyday as I listen to Him during worship and with fasting.
Holy Spirit – thank you for being so close. Speak to me… I am listening. Place your thoughts in my mind and your words in my mouth – just as you did with Barnabas and Saul. I choose to be your vessel; your instrument. Us me however would glorify you the most. I pray in Jesus’ Name.
