Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. He went up to the temple of the Lord with the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests and the prophets — all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the Lord. The king stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord — to follow the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant. 2 Kings 23:1-3
King Josiah found God’s Book in the temple, read it and renewed the covenant between Yahweh and His people.
What’s significant is the rest of the chapter. 2 Kings 23 describes in great detail the action Josiah took to purge the land of idolatry.
The covenant was a promise-agreement between people and God. It was based in God’s great love and selection of them to be His people. If they would love, follow and obey God, He would provide great blessing and purpose to their lives!
King Josiah found God’s Book, read it, renewed the covenant-agreement with God and then took action.
There is always action to take as God’s people, isn’t there? There are things to do in response to the covenant-agreement with God! Always. He has a will and His people walk in it. It is not enough to observe God’s Book and His will for us… we must do it. This is a relationship with the living God, not a history lesson to ponder.
What’s encouraging and inspiring about King Josiah is the action he took. When he committed to the covenant and to follow the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul… we can see that ALL meant ALL to Josiah. Every other rival god was destroyed.
There are plenty of rival gods that are vying for Jesus’ place in my life. All of them are daily destroyed by following Josiah’s example:
1. Find your Bible (is it lost?)
2. Read it
3. Renew your covenant with God in Jesus
4. Walk in that relationship
Thank You Lord Jesus for your blood of the new covenant that makes me righteous before God Almighty. Thank You for loving me like no other! Holy Spirit, help me to see the rival gods of this culture so I can actively knock them down and, like Josiah did, crush them to dust. I live for You today.
