”But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:17-18, 22-23
There is power from God on display in the Gospel and it captivates the human heart. It claims our allegiance and leaves no room for rival gods.
Rival gods come, however, and often people are enticed away from Jesus. Sin wants to reign and rule over us. The power of the Gospel is that sin will not reign. It will not be our master. We have become slaves, not to sin (we’ve been set free from sin!), but to righteousness.
This teaching has ‘claimed my allegiance’ for sure! The benefit I receive leads to holiness, Paul wrote. There is fruit to be seen in my life because of this teaching and power from Heaven. (May more be seen in me!) The result of this allegiance is eternal life, which comes about, not from my ability, but as a gift from God. Such grace claims my heart and willingness to be His slave. Others should be able to experience the fruit of holiness through my life.
Father, I willingly and joyfully serve You today. Lead me in this way everlasting and produce a lot of fruit that brings You glory through my life.
