2 Samuel 5:18-19, 25
Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim; 19 so David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?”
The Lord answered him, “Go, for I will surely hand the Philistines over to you.”
25 So David did as the Lord commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.
The greatest King Israel ever had was David. Those were called the Golden Years for the nation of Israel because of the expanse of the kingdom and the peace that was experienced during David’s reign. While he was not perfect, he was known – described by God even – as a ‘man after God’s own heart.’ This is certainly because of David’s humility. When he sinned against God, he was quick to repent (see Psalm 51).
Here in 2 Samuel 5 we see again the ‘secret’ to David’s success.
- David inquired of the Lord
- The Lord answered him
- David did as the Lord commanded
There’s the secret sauce! And it’s something everyone can do. It’s something I can do.
Where it gets tough for us is #3, especially when #2 wasn’t what we were hoping to hear. A few times of not hearing what we want to hear, we might even stop doing #1. Then we go forward as seems right in our own mind. (How’s that working out for you?)
Lord, You consistently speak powerfully to me through Your Word and by Your Spirit. Thank You for the answers You’ll give me as I call on You! Give me the heart and the ability to obey what You’ve said, and quickly! Please be victorious through me and bring glory to Yourself this day.
