Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
These are bold words from Paul! And here is not the only place he has said as much. Paul consistently presents himself as one who is worthy to be emulated. He’s always quick to say “as I follow Christ” – which is right. What’s Paul’s example to follow? In 1 Corinthians 9:27 he wrote, “No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.” Earlier in verse 24 he wrote, “Run in such a way as to get the prize.”
This life is for keeps! I only go through this life once, so what I do is important. The stakes are high! I want my life to count for something. Not just my salvation, but also for the eternities of those around me. I need to run in such a way as to win the prize. I need to run in such a way that I can say with full confidence to others: “Follow me as I follow Christ.”
Lord Jesus – I am Your follower. I want to follow You everyday and in every way. Thank You for Your Spirit that helps me do this. As I enter the ‘strict training’ (9:25) of being Your disciple, thank You for Your Presence that encourages me; Your protection that keeps me safe; and Your direction which points me in the right way. Thank You for leading me so well! Grace me with ears to hear and a willing heart that I might follow you well! All for Your glory – and so I can say to those around me, ‘Follow me as I follow Christ.’ I love You, Lord.
