To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:31-36
Jesus’ teaching brings freedom and for those who believe and live it, there is a change of position in life. Awesome.
The Jews did not want any change of position or status. They were, after all, God’s chosen people. The skewed understanding of their position brought pride and pride may be the worst of all sins! Jesus explains that all who sin are not sons, but slaves. Slaves to sin. Their position is not what they believe it to be.
Jesus’ teaching brings freedom and a change of position. We embrace the sacrifice for our sins that He brings and His forgiveness changes our position. We move from a slave to an adopted child of the Most High God. Come on!
In the Roman world slaves had to purchase their status change. Our status change was purchased too, but not by us. We couldn’t pay that price.
So if I’m a son of the Most High, why would I live as though I’m a slave? The son is in the family forever! The slave has no position in the family, while the son can not be removed.
To be ‘free indeed’ but to live enslaved seems like a horrible thing and dishonors God. He has so loved that He gave His one and only Son… I need to live in that grace and freedom!
Thank You Lord Jesus for changing my position. This is actual reality: I am an adopted son of God! Thank You for Your Spirit that dwells within me, giving evidence that I am Your child. Live through me so that others may see the beauty and power of Your teaching. I worship and live for You today.
