21 I did not send these prophets,
yet they have run with their message;
I did not speak to them,
yet they have prophesied.
22 But if they had stood in my council,
they would have proclaimed my words to my people
and would have turned them from their evil ways
and from their evil deeds.
The beginning of God’s people living righteous lives is their leaders standing in the council of God. Words are cheap. It’s easy to say that you’ve been in God’s Presence; that you’ve heard from Him and ten run ahead with your own message, your own words. Only God’s Words spoken through His leaders and shepherds will convict and compel God’s people to higher living. “But you must not mention ‘the oracle of the Lord’ again, because every man’s own word becomes his oracle and so you distort the Words of the living God.” (Jeremiah 23:36) The shepherds and leaders were the first to be judged. The first to cry and wail (Jeremiah 25:35,36).
It would be infinitely better for me not to speak than to speak my own words as God’s oracle. Fear of this is appropriate… and it could keep me from speaking at all. And yet, God has asked me to speak for Him. How do I do this with any confidence at all? Jeremiah 23:22 says that if I stand in His council, if I spend time with Almighty God and listen more than I talk, He will speak to my heart and I can proclaim His Words to His people. And His Words have power to turn people from sin.
Thank You, Father for putting Your Words, Your heart and Your will for me on paper. I seek Your heart and council… I seek Your Words for my life and to share with others. How awesome to think that Your Words can come out of my mouth! May it be so today.
