Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.” He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.” // Luke 8:19-21
Jesus isn’t disrespecting His mother Mary here, nor His siblings. He is seizing another teachable moment and using it to promote the Kingdom in the hearts of people.
It’s shocking to us, maybe, but that should push us toward understanding His point. We easily don’t have ears to hear and wonder about Jesus’ poor relationship with His family. This is Jesus… let’s hear His point.
Hearing God’s Word and putting it into practice brings us close to Jesus. The relationship is as strong and beautiful as biological family. There is allegiance and love between Jesus and His family! The pathway to this depth of relationship is through hearing God’s Word and putting it into practice.
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. (James 1:22)
Hearing the Word but not living it out is deceitful to our hearts. We can have the appearance of spirituality but be hollow on the inside. To practice what has been preached comes from within us and indicates a changed life.
Let’s draw close to Jesus through hearing and practicing His Word.
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your patience and love toward me. Help me to seize every opportunity to live out this Good News and demonstrate the redeemed life You’ve purchased with Your own blood. You are awesome and worthy to be lived for today!
