“… for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”
God called Zerubabbel to rebuild the temple. His hand started the project and God said that his hand would finish it. Even so, it would not be by Zerubabbel’s own strength and power that this work would be accomplished. Start to finish it would be by the Holy Spirit that it would be completed. Jesus called His disciples and was training them for the work He had for them. He told them of the difficult days that would be coming, but He said, “Don’t worry!” The Holy Spirit would teach them what they should say. Interestingly, the teaching would take place at the moment when it was needed. Not by cleverness or well phrased words, but by His Spirit, says the Lord. Because God is dwelling with His people, He can lead, guide, direct, instruct and instill words in them on the fly! There is no need for prep time – God is more than capable. For us as disciples the prep time is with us. Disciples must follow the Lord and be in tune to his voice. When He leads we must be used to listening to Him. We can grow in our faith and in our ability to listen and follow when the Holy Spirit teaches us.
I enjoy being well prepared. I like knowing what I am going to do or say prior to doing or saying it! And yet, I need to depend fully on the Holy Spirit. My thorough preparation, while I think it honors God, could move me to depending on my own might and power and words and not the Holy Spirit. My thorough preparation time needs to be in listening and responding to the Holy Spirit’s leading and teaching in my life. As I am moving by His direction, then my life and ministry will be infused with His power and will be useful for Him. It will also assure that I will be ready for the return of Christ (Luke 12). At any time Jesus could come to inspect this ‘house.’ If I am being led by His Spirit, following His directives – I’ll be ready for that day.
Holy Spirit – I am listening for Your leading today. Accomplish Your will and purposes for my life. I do not depend on my abilities and gifts, even though You have given them to me. I depend on You. Thank You for allowing me to be Your man; Your servant! It is a joy to serve You. Do what You want through me today.
