7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
8 “ ‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
9 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are but rules taught by men.’”
The result of giving God lip-service is useless worship and legalism. Honoring God with your lips but having a heart far from Him means that you could be dong a lot of things in worship and service to God, but it’s all worthless. God is not being worshipped… He’s not being served. What God wants most is our hearts – beating strongly for Him! Our worship can be sporadic and our service weak, but if our hearts are right, God is pleased! He’ll work out the rough spots in our lives in time, but you can’t substitute a heart for God.
What’s interesting is the results of giving God lip-service.
- You’re wasting your time in supposed worship.
- Your teaching becomes man-made rules
Having a heart for God means grace toward others. Without that you’ll quickly head toward legalism as you attempt to keep the facade going. It’s hard to be gracious and loving toward people when you don’t really love God.
Father, would you continue to make my heart of stone into the heart of flesh You desire. I place You above all other things! I worship You today. I want my teaching to reflect Your heart, but that will only happen as my heart is close to Yours. Make me like Jesus so I can communicate Your truth! Grace me so I can love people like You love people. I live for You this day.
