Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
Jesus was in His very nature divine. God Almighty. The attitude that we see in Jesus that Paul says we need to take on for ourselves is humility. Jesus was everything, but He made Himself nothing. He did not cling on to equality with God. He humbled Himself and became a human. While here, the Son of God was a servant. He did not come to be served, which is the normal pattern for human royalty… No, He came to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). Jesus’ humility and obedience to His Father was to the point of death on a cross.
My attitude is to be the same as Jesus’ was. Humility… obedience… service. When I think of my various positions and labels in life, such as husband, father, pastor, friend… whatever scenario arises where I begin to think that I ought to be catered to because of my position, Philippians 2 needs to flash through my mind. I have no position that compares to Jesus’! And I won’t have any act of obedience that will require more than what He was obedient to. The spectrum with Jesus is the greatest possible distance! From Almighty God to crucified human, there cannot be any demotion greater than that, and He chose it. He made Himself nothing. He was humble, obedient and a servant. I need that same posture, and Jesus is my model. He is my Lord. If He did that, what’s my excuse for not humbling myself?
May Your humility and obedience inspire me daily, Lord, to serve as You would have me. I yield to You again this day. Live Your life through me is my prayer.
