Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well… 1 Timothy 1:18
Timothy needed to remember and Paul wrote this letter to do just that. The truth is that Timothy’s life had become difficult. Life is hard for everyone at various times and in various ways, but for Timothy (and anyone carrying the Gospel forward in this world), life was a battle.
Paul writes so that Timothy might fight the battle well.
Timothy’s battle was one lived by faith, not by sight. There were many enemies and those that opposed him, the toughest being the invisible ones.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God,so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:10-12
We all, like Timothy, need to be reminded of the truth. We begin our new lives with Christ with such joy and promise! It can be discouraging – even shocking – when opposition comes our way. We need to be reminded of what Christ has done and what He is doing! We need to be reminded of who we are in Jesus and the hope that we have in Him. The suffering of this life, because of the Gospel that’s alive in us, will all be worth it when we see Him face to face.
However, as it is written:
“What no eye has seen,
what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived” —
the things God has prepared for those who love him —
these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. 1 Corinthians 9:2
Through the regular disciplines of following Jesus, I am reminded of these important things and they help me to fight the battle well. This is not by my strength, but His.
So Lord, I put on the full armor of God that Paul wrote about in order to take my stand against the schemes of the enemy. Greater are You in me than he that is in the world. Be glorified by showing yourself strong in an otherwise very weak person. You are awesome and I live for you today.
