2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.
The blessed man steers clear of evil and those who are wicked. His delight is in God’s Word… not in the temporary pleasures of this world, but he loves the enduring, eternal Word of God (1 Peter 1:25). He loves God’s Word so much, he enjoys it so thoroughly and it is such a part of his life that he meditates on it day and night. The result of this kind of love and devotion to God’s Word is a life that is itself strong and enduring and productive. A tree firmly rooted by streams of living water producing fruit in its season – whose leaves do not wither. In some of the last few weeks I’ve noticed some of the trees we have had withered leaves. They were shriveled up and not too pretty. Now here in early fall their leaves are falling to the ground quicker than usual. A friend said back in August, “I water my trees…” If I had provided the trees (especially the small, young one) some of what it desperately needed, its leaves would not have withered so badly. This is the image of Psalm 1:3. The person who plants themselves into God’s Word has an inexhaustible supply of living water that keeps their lives vital and healthy. They produce good fruit in their lives! They don’t wither away prematurely. Why? Because they love and are devoted to God’s Word. They meditate on it… they think about it. They correct their living back to the eternal Word of God.
The more I read the Bible, meditate on it and journal – the more I find myself delighting in God’s Word! I believe the psalmist and want that healthy tree image for my life. I want to not wither and I want to be productive… it all comes back to my attitude and devotion to God’s Word.
Father – I love Your Word! Thank You for providing the Bible to us. Thank You that we can read and understand it – and as we live it out, You strengthen our lives! You are a great and awesome God! You are worthy of our praise!
