Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. The words that I say to you are not just my own. Rather it is the Father living in me who is doing His work. Before long the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me, and I am in you. Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.
Jesus was not teaching His own ideas but only what He received from His Father God. In John 12 he said, “For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it” (vs. 49). So when Jesus makes the marvelous statements about eternal life and a relationship that I can have with Him and His Father – these promises are from God! These come to me through faith, love and obedience.
Faith – the world will no longer see me but you will see me – the eyes of faith!
Love and obedience – he who loves me obeys what I command.
Then the promise: “He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to Him” (14:21). “My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him” (14:23). “Because I live you also will live” (14:19).
My heavenly Father – the One who created me and everything I see – wants to make His home with me. He wants to reside daily with me. Go, the Son has told me this through His Word and by His Spirit. These are the words and promises of God. God is a communal God. The Triunity is God in relationship – and He extends this community to me! The way to realize this invitation is through faith, love and obedience.
Thank You, Father for these promises. Lord Jesus, thank You for being faithful to everything You received from the Father. Your obedience means my salvation. Praise Your Name… I love You. Spirit, thank You for taking up residence in my heart and mind and for leading me everyday. My heart is Your home… my life is yours… allow me to speak You very words and not my own. Receive glory through me today. In Jesus’ Name I pray.
