King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. 2 They were from nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.” Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. 3 He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray.
As he grew old Solomon’s heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God. It has been earlier in his life. God appeared to Solomon twice and he had God’s hand on all that he did. His reign and his wisdom were notorious. What happened to Solomon’s heart? It wasn’t because God had spoken. He had! Through the Torah and even directly God had spoken to Solomon. The text says that he was led astray. In spite of God’s Word to Solomon, he was led astray! How did this happen? There’s one telling word in verse 2: “nevertheless.” God had said what would happen if His people were to intermarry with the nations surrounding them. “… they will surely turn your hearts after other gods.” God knew… God spoke it… He commanded! Yet “nevertheless” Solomon held fast to these foreign women in love. In spite of the Word; in spite of the warning – Solomon disobeyed God. Even the King is not above God’s Word to His people. Maybe especially the King! He could not say “nevertheless I will…” and not have his heart led astray. It was.
I wonder if my heart every says “nevertheless?” Are there things that God has commanded; things that He has warned me about and after hearing them I say “nevertheless I will…?” Kings, prophets nor pastors can have this posture of pride before God. My heart and mind can be led astray. Don’t be deceived! Don’t be naïve! I commit to continually have my heart and mind molded by God’s Word. I am a disciple of Jesus, a Christian man. I choose to yield to Christ so that I won’t be led astray. Unlike Solomon, I want to finish well.
Lord Jesus – I recognize Your leadership in my life today. Please point out to me this day any directives from You that I am not following wholeheartedly. I commit ahead of time to change and obey You so that You may receive glory through my life and so that I may not be led astray. Thank You for providing what is best for me! I love You.
