I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’
These are the words of Jesus spoken to Paul as reported by Paul. When Jesus said these words, Paul had been blinded by the light on the road to Damascus and the words to him were “I am sending you to open their eyes…” Paul would be in the middle of this illustration from the Lord. Paul had been spiritually blind – his eyes needed to be opened. As he sat in Damascus for 3 days his physical eyes were blind too and the words of Christ would replay in his mind over and over again. “I am sending you to open their eyes…” As Paul testifies before Festus and King Agrippa, he is a man who has turned from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God. Paul is one who had received the forgiveness of his many sins and had been sanctified by his faith in Jesus… and he was doing exactly what Jesus had sent him to do. Agrippa was clearly under the conviction of the Holy Spirit – but he did not want to change – so he abruptly left the room. It takes a changed person to change a person. This is another amazing thought of the Kingdom. God uses us to turn people… He uses us to open the eyes of the blind. He sends us to do it. Clearly it is the Lord doing this miracle in the hearts of people, but He has decided to send us to do it through.
Nowadays, as much as ever, I feel sent from God to open blind eyes and turn people from darkness to light. I too am one who has received forgiveness of sins (Thank You Lord) and am sanctified by my faith in Him. Because of this I am sent back into the darkness to turn people to the light. Whom do I turn? The people God places in front of me, including my family, church family, neighbors and this community. We are all living in darkness and we need light! We need hope and we need the forgiveness of sins. These are all found in Jesus.
Lord, I believe it is Your desire to send all of Your people back into the darkness to bring Your message of hope and grace to everyone. I feel especially commissioned this morning to do just that. Would You strengthen me for the task and lead me where I should go… all for Your glory.
