“Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” But since sexual immorality is occurring…” (1 Corinthians 7:1-2a)
Take a look at our culture after taking a look at your own heart and you might agree with Paul, “sexual immorality is occurring.” What I’d say is that you MUST agree with Paul. Sexual immorality was happening in his day, some 2000 years ago. It’s happening today.
If we can agree that it’s occurring, then we can move on to how to guard against it. We spend too much time trying to deny that immorality is occurring; in us, in our homes, in our church. Let’s echo Paul and recognize that it’s occurring and dedicate ourselves to purity.
Living in the flesh brings death. Sexual sin is especially heinous because it’s a sin against your own body. Paul wrote in the previous chapter, “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body” (1 Corinthians 6:18). He goes on to say that our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit. The implications are as vast as they are obvious! Bottom line: We are to honor God with our bodies.
Let’s stop believing each other when we say that we have no problem with the lust and sexual immorality of our culture. We do have a problem! Sexual immorality IS occurring. Christians who are experiencing victory in this area of their lives have engaged the battle. There is no victory prior to the battlefield. All of us can, with God’s help, be victorious, but we must truthfully enter the battlefield all around us. Honesty is the path forward because sexual sin continually hides. It will not come out into the light. So drag it out and let it be seen; it’ll lose its power in your life.
Another friend of mine has devastated his life and family due to sexual immorality. The comment ‘Who knew?’ always is spoken when this kind of news reaches our ears. People we know and love had sexual immorality secrets… and we’re surprised. Let’s be surprised no longer. Sexual immorality is occurring. Let’s drag it out into the light of Jesus and crucify it there. Victory!
Lord, you know us better than we know ourselves. Thank you for the path to freedom that you’ve provided for us. Thank you for the church, a group of other believers that we can share real life with. Help us to be honest in all things and experience victory in this life. Thank you the You’ve won the ultimate victory for us at the cross! We cling to it.
