These men are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them. For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of sinful human nature, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud.”
Peter describes these ‘bold and arrogant men’ who entice people through the lustful desires of the flesh. They promise freedom to people but are themselves slaves of depravity.
If you are going to be a leader and an influencer of people, you can only lead to where you have been. You can only promise to others what you are experiencing, otherwise it is a lie. These evil men in 2 Peter 2 were promising others freedom, but they were not free. Their sin and depravity is clearly described in detail. Depravity, of course, can easily overcome a person. They were slaves of depravity “for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.”
If I am going to lead and influence people… if I am going to promise them freedom then I must be a slave to Jesus. I must be mastered by Him because freedom is not found anywhere else. Jesus sets us free from the evil desires and entanglements of this world and the evil desires in our own hearts.
It’s not a question of if I will be a slave. I will be. The question is to what or Whom will I be enslaved. I choose Christ! There is freedom in Him.
Lord Jesus – master me today! Be my Lord in every aspect of my life and in every minute of this day. I worship You for You are worthy and thank You for the freedom You graciously give me.
