On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.”
Jesus was in His post resurrection glorified body… just about to ascend to Heaven to be forever at the right hand of God the Father… and He was eating with His disciples. Sharing life. Sharing a meal.
I think we have misunderstandings about Heaven and eternity. We’re not going to be spiritual puff-clouds floating through Heaven. We’re going to have spiritual bodies that will be active and doing things. Maybe even eating and certainly sharing life with others. Heaven is that banquet table of God’s provision!
If God created us with physical bodies here on earth, why wouldn’t He have the physical be the reality in Heaven? Streets of gold. A great City. I think our misunderstanding stems from our frustration in the flesh. The Spirit is what’s good so there must not be any physical in Heaven, since the flesh is bad. Here and now our flesh does battle against the Spirit (Galatians 5:17), but it wasn’t always that way. Nor will it be that way forever.
What we can do today to prepare for that day is to discipline our physical selves, making it our slave, as Paul wrote – so that our spirits can grow to be more like Jesus. Our lives in the physical will reflect Him too. And one day when we see Him face to face, Jesus will end the struggle. The battle will be finished and we’ll be like Him.
Lord, I look forward to Heaven but I live in this day. May my whole life – body, soul & spirit – bring attention to You today. Thank You for the grace You’ve given and the future I have in You!
