”For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.” 2 Corinthians 5:4-5
Paul has already been describing to the church in Corinth about living by faith, eternity and the difficulties of living in this world. Here he describes the groaning and the burden while being in the flesh (this tent) on the earth.
But one day this experience is going to be ‘swallowed up by life!’ All of it. The wrestling, the pain and the struggle – all consumed by the glory of God. Clearly this encourages Paul and keeps him moving forward in serving Christ.
“We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.” 2 Corinthians 5:20
We can have confidence in this hope because the Spirit is God’s guarantee. As I am led by the Holy Spirit and acknowledge His Presence in me and among us, the Church, He is the evidence and the promise that this mortal experience is going to be consumed by life.
This brings confidence to Paul. It brings confidence to me! As long as I am here in the flesh, I am away from the Lord – not spiritually or emotionally, but physically not in His Presence. One day that is going to change! We can look forward to being swallowed up by life.
”So we make it our goal to please Him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.” 2 Corinthians 5:9
Knowing the promise of the life that is coming helps me in this life. I have clarity and better priorities for sure!
Thank you, Father, for the hope I have in You. Thank You for the Holy Spirit and the guarantee that He is for what is to come. Show Yourself strong in my life today. I live for You.
