Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 5:6-11
We tend to think that if we are spiritually alert and in tune with God that life will be easier. It may certainly be better but it will not be without suffering.
When we suffer we can think that we’re doing something wrong or somehow outside of God’s leading. Maybe. Or maybe we’re in the middle of God’s will which is why we suffer. How many Christ-followers are suffering today because they chose to serve Christ? If they had ‘played it safe’ they would not be suffering like they are.
Peter wants the church to be alert and of sober mind because of the spiritual conflict we are in. Suffering is normal for the Christian.
But in just a little while God is going to lift His people up. In just a little while God Himself is going to restore us and make us strong. In just a little while… after a short time of suffering, we will experience eternal glory in Christ.
This life I’ve been given in Christ is full of joy and suffering. Both are normal and to be expected. Both are good as they bring me to the Father in worship.
Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
James wrote that our lives are just a mist that is here and then vanishes (James 4:14). In just a little while I’ll be in Heaven with Jesus.
Thank You Lord for the joy and the suffering that lead me to You. I do not ask that You remove suffering from my life. I ask that You strengthen me in the midst of it so I can bring glory to You. And thank You for the moments of joy in life that give me a glimpse of Heaven. I live for You today and look forward to THAT Day!
