But you have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you. Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in trouble!
God is mighty to save but He doesn’t save everyone! He saves those who honor Him as God. A day even came when He decided not to save His own chosen people! Why? Because they had chosen to serve other gods. Gods that could not save. God says, ‘Go cry out to them. Let them save you…’
God’s chosen people were breaking His first commandment, “You shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3). People have the ability to chose their gods. You choose your gods by serving them. Who are you going to serve? What are you going to worship? The Israelites served the Baals and Ashthoreths because they fed the selfish pleasures of the flesh. They turned away from the living God.
In our culture there are not any idols or temples that I can see, but there are plenty of gods to worship. These gods feed our selfishness. Our worship of them (through our allegiance, love, time and energy) will turn us away from the living God. We choose our gods in this culture as readily as they did in ancient Israel. God would say, “If those gods are going to steal my glory and your worship, the worship that I deserve, then cry out to them for help. Let’s see how that goes…”
You alone, Father, are worthy of my heart, time, attention and energy. You alone can save! Give me the insight to see the idols I am prone to bow down to and serve. Give me the strength to only serve You! Thank You for Your Holy Spirit who lives with me this day. Lead me on.
