“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 NIV)
The word ‘might’ is missing in this verse. “In this world you might have trouble,” isn’t that what Jesus wanted to say? We live our lives in the ‘might’ and are surprised when we have trouble in this world. That’s surprising.
Jesus said that we will have trouble in this world. Look for it! Expect it. Don’t be surprised by it. Don’t embrace it, either, but run to Jesus. Don’t allow a defeated attitude to rule your heart because you are experiencing trouble in this world. Jesus said, ‘Take heart! I have overcome the world.’
In Jesus is my victory. I do not overcome the world except to the extent that I trust in Christ. He has overcome the world. My victory is in Him!
There is a ‘may’ in this verse. “… so that in me you may have peace.” There is peace found in Jesus, the Overcomer. He has told us enough for us to experience His peace, but it only comes to us if we run to Him.
Thank You Lord for the courage and peace You give. Thank You for the trouble in this world because it propels me to You. Thank You for overcoming! I will overcome too, by Your blood and the Word of my Testimony. Today I live for You.
