“The Lord warned Israel and Judah through all his prophets and seers: “Turn from your evil ways. Observe my commands and decrees, in accordance with the entire Law that I commanded your ancestors to obey and that I delivered to you through my servants the prophets.”
14 But they would not listen and were as stiff-necked as their ancestors, who did not trust in the Lord their God. 15 They rejected his decrees and the covenant he had made with their ancestors and the statutes he had warned them to keep. They followed worthless idols and themselves became worthless. They imitated the nations around them although the Lord had ordered them, “Do not do as they do.”
2 Kings 17:13-15
Worship is important to God! Wow. So, who are you going to worship? This was the first of the Ten Commandments: “You shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3)
Israel’s wickedness of idol worship aroused the Lord’s anger (vs. 11-12) and He said, ‘You shall not do this.’ But His people worshipped other gods; worthless gods made of wood and stone, which made them worthless. They were stiff-necked and would not listen. They would not trust in God and ‘they imitated the nations around them.’
I live in a pagan culture that has set up all kinds of idols. We worship what we give our heart, time, attention and money to. In this culture, God is not at the top of the list. His people are not to become worthless by worshipping worthless things!
The God of infinite worth has made Himself known in Jesus Christ. We become what we set our affections on, isn’t that right? The Gospel calls us out from among the nations and the Lord tells us to be different. We are not to imitate the godless world around us. We are not to do what they do. We will either forsake the commands of God Almighty or we will follow them.
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. 17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
Father, thank You for making Yourself knonw in Jesus. I can know You… how awesome is that!? Thank You for all You’ve created for my enjoyment and Your glory. I choose to worship You and not what You’ve made. You are of infinite worth, and I worship You today.
